Writing
Writing serves the purpose of communicating, and it is through the process of writing that people develop thinking as well as effective communicative skills. The third grade program has been designed to provide students with ample opportunities to communicate in writing. Students will learn to take notes and messages, write letters and stories, summaries and questionnaires.
Writers' Workshop
Third grade students will learn to write using the Writers' Workshop techinique. They will organize ideas in brainstorms and thinking maps, write first drafts that eventually will be edited, corrected, and published. During the process students will learn syntax and punctuation, and develop the necessary skills to evaluate their own pieces. The Writer’s Workshop method guides students systematically through experiences that eventually will become habits.
The ultimate goal of writing is to allow students to become proficient communicators. In order to achieve this goal, the third grade program sets the foundation for some important styles such as personal narrative, expository, and fictional writing. In third grade, students will build the necessary skills and habits for future more challenging projects by writing simple paragraphs and short stories, and later longer and more detailed stories.
